Switched to a JBL 6 Disc Changer

Here is my write up for switching to a JBL 6 Disc in dash from a JBL Single CD changer.

First thing, do not buy the Sienna unit as it does not fit perfectly with the Silver Bezel that surrounds the head unit. The 2004 JBL Single disc unit has a cutout at the edges of the face plate that creates a "lip" around the edge. The Sienna JBL 6 Disc, does not have the cutout so it hits the silver bezel in the back. Through some cutting and sanding, it is probably possible, but I didn't want to go through that route. I found this out the hard way and now I have to sell the Sienna JBL Unit (see it on ebay...) The Sienna unit though does work mechanically and functions just like from the factory.

Fortunately a member on the board (Prozac), had just recently done the Navigation swap and had his factory JBL 6 Disc from his 2005 SE as well as the silver bezel and A/C-Trip-clock unit. The bezel and the A/C-Trip-clock unit are necessary to accomodate the 2005 JBL 6 disc unit. The 2005 JBL 6 Disc has different dimentions so this is why you needed different trim pieces. He needed the trim piece and my A/C-Trip-clock from my 2004 4Runner to accomodate his Navigation, so we worked out a deal and swapped parts.

2004 4runner JBL Single Disc Part Number: 86120-25291
2005 4Runner JBL 6 Disc Part Number: 86120-35201
2005 Sienna JBL 6 Disc Part Number: 86120-0C140

If you look closely at the JBL Single and Sienna JBL 6 Disc, you can see the lip on the outer edge. With that lip cutout you can use the outer bezel and A/C controls that came with your Single Disc 4Runner. You could also try shaving the back of the bezel, but I wasn't brave enough. The Sienna JBL unit does "fit" but it is not flush and makes the panels stick out. Well hopefully this will help someone, if you have any questions let me know...

Nice setup, the 4Runner 6-disc looks a whole lot better!

I'm just wondering if the trip/clock works out okay since 05's have a different display than 03-04's.

I can confirm that the trip/clock works (not just okay) but as a seamless swap. The only difference among the 03-04 vs the 05 is right under the PASSENGER. The 05 indicates whether or not the air bag is on or the air bag is off vs the 03-04 not giving you an on or off notification but a passenger visual reminder to put your seatbelt on (if you weight is enough).

Sharp4runr, we can swap the actual readout if you are interested. It doesn't bother me either way. If you notice that an on or off message is not displayed, perhaps we do need to do the swap. Either way, let me know.

I'll have to check in the AM to see if putting pressure activates the light still. Its not a big concern either way to me too

Very nice! I sure like my SCION 6 CD better than the single OEM. Nice new avatar too.

Now you just need to take off the crappy decal that warns about loading too many disks at the same time.

Note to all.... I STAND CORRECTED.

The trip / clock functions do work as mentioned, however, the ABS light is now activated on the drivers' instrument cluster. I do believe that this is associated with the readout for the passenger side air bag.

Sharp4runr, did you notice any difference on your instrument cluster this morning? I sent you a PM

Basically the trip / clock / passenger abs readout display is held into place within the trim bezel with screws - so they are hot swappable.

Prozac - I didn't get a PM so send another one my way or give me a call.

I didn't have any trouble lights come on this morning and the seat belt light for the passenger comes on when pressure is applied to the seat. I'm not sure, but maybe your lights are coming on because of the airbag display? In the 2004 there was no option to turn off the passenger airbag. We can switch out the units today if you have time, lmk.

I'm thinking that is what the problem is. I will be sure to give you a call a bit later on today. We can just unscrew the readout portion and do the swap tonight - very simple fix.

I did heavily research the oemvalue.com route before I purchased the nav unit and there was limited discussion about what components were needed should someone do the swap. Sure there was talk about if you have the non jbl unit, it would be a direct fit, however, if you do not have the jbl unit, you actually need to purchase two parts. Multiple people made mention of needing the center trim sub assembly (outer silver suround trim piece), but I did not see any make any mention of needing the smaller inner silver surround trim that holds the trip / display readout.

I ordered both parts and cancelled the order - but it was still needed to get the factory finish.

OK, Prozac and I switched the "brains" as well as the window in the A/C-Trip-Clock and everything works fine for us. I didn't have an issue, but on his 2005 the ABS light stays on.

We traded windows because he has a display for the airbag off which isn't included in the 2004 4Runners. My 4Runner only has the seatbelt and the "alarm" icons.

sharp4runr or anyone else, I was wondering whether the indention/recess trim piece around the standard radio is a single piece or whether it's attached to the entire dash. The reason I'm asking is I want to install a double din navigation in my 4runner and I have the JBL radio system. I went the parts department at a Toyota dealership and they couldn't locate the piece on their computer.

Thanks.

Whoa... you went to the parts counter and that numbskull wasn't able to look up / give you exact pricing on the components you need. That would be about the time when I would ask to speak to someone else. Going to the dealership is a pain in the ass as it is, much less coming away from the experience without gaining any knowledge. Crap IMHO!

I'd call Colin at Carson Toyota for pricing.

Basically you will need to order two components as the indention/recess trim piece around the standard radio is comprised of two pieces.

One is identified in the IPB as # 25 and is called the center panel assembly and it provides the suround (left, side and top) for the stock (non jbl) radio and the other is # 56 called computer readout bezel which provides the suround (lower lip) for the stock (non jbl) radio. You do not need the a/c control assy, you need the bezel only.

Yup, Prozac and I switched out those components. He had the JBL6 and went with navigation, while I had the JBL single disc and wanted to go JBL6. It worked out for both of us and I got to meet another 4Runner gearhead in the process.
