Westin Safari Grill and Hella 500

I installed the Westin Safari Grill last week and finally got around to wiring up the Hella 500 lights. I was on a semi budget and the two cost $216. I bought the Westin @ http://truckaccessorydepot.com/ecomm/product_info.php/products_id/1116

Hella 500s were purchased at the local Advance Auto

The Safari Grill was pretty easy to install though I did almost strip a bolt. The bolts supplied are not the highest quality and suggest buying some at your local hardware store instead.

The Hellas were relatively easy to install as well. They were the first lights I've ever installed all by myself (with some pointers from my bro). I'll be buying the factory fog light switch though to make it a cleaner install.

Looks like a very clean install. Nice pictures. What are you using for a switch to turn the lights on and off?
 
The Hella lights came with a wiring harness and ghetto looking green switch. The switch illuminates green when on. It'll do until the factory switch comes in from partznet. Then I'll swap it out as it uses the same connections.

I can take a pic if you really care, but its really nothing to write home about.

make sure you invest in covers for them (if you don't already have them). I have heard a lot of people talk about how they crack a lot from rocks and such on the road.
 
looks great - can you post a sideview pic so we can see how far (if at all) those lights stick out? (and the bar too)

Yup, they came with covers but I took them off for the pic.

I'll try to get a profile shot tomorrow, but the lights don't stick out at all...
 
Driving or Fog?

I have the Safari Bar on mine as well! Did you go with the Driving or Fog lights? Are there any restrictions/laws against using them in conjunction with the factory set up?

The Hella 500s are driving lights. Not sure of any restrictions, but I don't see why you can't use it in conjuction with the factory lights. Its probably illegal to run the Hella lights, factory low beams and factory "fog" lights all at once, but I don't do that.

The way I have it wired is probably illegal as I don't have the Hella 500s go off when the high beams are on (like how the factory fog lights react)
 
i just got a westin, but i tried searching on how to hook up the lights, but they kind of beat around the bush, can you direct me to a thread or give an explaination yourself. thanks, late.

Monostereo - Did you get the Hella 500s also? If so, it should have come with a wiring harness and directions to install it. Basically this is what I did for the Hellas:

I ran the wiring following the directions. The lights needed a ground so I grounded them to a nearby screw on the bumper. I tapped into the driving light for the relay so that the fog lights can come one with the driving lights. I ran the power wire (fuse included) to the battery and a ground wire to the chasis for the relay. I ran the wiring for the switch into the cabin and tapped it power and ground as well. I'll look around for the instructions for the wiring, but it is pretty straight forward.

sharp4runr, you didnt use the Hella relay? can you please diagram how you wired yours? I have the same setup...

I did use the relay, but you don't have to use a relay to make the lights work. I used the relay because I wanted the lights to only come on if 1) the parking lights were on and 2) the fog light switch in the cabin is on. That way, if I forget to turn off the fog lights, they will go off when the rest of the lights on the truck go off.

You can wire the hellas to come on anytime when you turn the fog light switch to on. No other lights need to be on. Though if you walk away from the truck with the fog lights on, you'll come back to a dead batter :D

I used the instructions that came with the lights, but instead of tapping into the low beam lights to turn on the relay (This is the legal method), I instead tapped into the running lights.
